WatchNigeria Elections ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our election monitoring platform. Please read this policy carefully. If you disagree with its terms, please discontinue use of the Platform.
We collect information you provide directly to us, including: full name, email address, phone number, National Identification Number (NIN), Voter Registration Number, state and local government of residence, assigned polling unit, profile photographs, and election-related data you submit. We also automatically collect device information, IP addresses, browser type, operating system, location data (when you grant permission), and usage activity on the Platform.
We use the information we collect to: operate and maintain the Platform; verify your identity and eligibility as a field agent or observer; process result submissions and attendance check-ins; send you important notifications about your tasks and assignments; facilitate live video streaming and election reporting features; improve our Platform's performance and user experience; comply with applicable laws and legal obligations; and detect and prevent fraudulent or unauthorized activity.
When you use features such as attendance check-in, result submission, or live streaming, we may collect your GPS location data to verify your proximity to your assigned polling unit. This data is used solely for election integrity purposes — to confirm that reported data comes from the correct physical location. You may disable location access in your device settings, but this will limit certain Platform features.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We may share your information with: election observer organizations and civic society groups participating in election monitoring (in anonymized or aggregated form); government bodies including INEC when required by law; service providers who assist us in operating the Platform (under strict data processing agreements); and law enforcement agencies when required by court order or applicable law. Field agents' names and assigned polling units may be visible to their assigned coordinators and administrators on the Platform.
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal information, including encryption of data in transit and at rest, secure authentication protocols, and regular security audits. However, no electronic transmission over the internet or information storage technology is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
We retain your personal information for as long as your account remains active or as needed to provide you with our services. Election data submitted to the Platform may be retained indefinitely for historical documentation and civic transparency purposes. You may request deletion of your account and personal data by contacting us, subject to our legal obligations to retain certain records.
Subject to applicable Nigerian data protection laws (including the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023), you have the right to: access the personal information we hold about you; request correction of inaccurate data; request deletion of your data in certain circumstances; object to certain types of processing; and withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. We use cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate the Platform, remember your preferences, and analyze usage patterns. These include essential cookies (required for the Platform to function), analytics cookies (such as Google Analytics, which collect anonymized data about Platform usage), and advertising cookies. We participate in Google AdSense, which may use cookies (including the DoubleClick DART cookie) and similar technologies from Google and third-party advertising partners to serve advertisements based on your prior visits to our website and other sites across the Internet. The Platform is not directed to children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you become aware that a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us, and we will take steps to delete such information promptly.
