Super Eagles at the World Cup: Nigeria 1-1 Ecuador — Match Report

Nigeria. Ecuador. Houston, Texas. The roar of 70,000 fans, at least 30,000 of them green-and-white. The Super Eagles have arrived at the World Cup.

The final score — 1-1 — is both a disappointment and a foundation.

First Half: Ecuador's Early Threat

Ecuador settled faster. Their physicality in midfield pressed Nigeria's build-up high, forcing turnovers in dangerous positions. The Gonzalez goal — 23rd minute, a clinical finish after a quick counter — was not against the run of play.

Nigeria's early nervousness was visible. Alex Iwobi struggled to find space between Ecuador's midfield and defensive lines.

Coach Eguavoen made a tactical switch at half-time: narrowing the midfield and releasing the right wing-back to overlap with more freedom.

Second Half: Osimhen Changes Everything

The 61st minute. Iwobi receives the ball at the edge of Ecuador's box, spins his marker, and slides a perfectly weighted pass into Osimhen's run. One touch to control. One touch to shoot. Top corner.

The celebration: Osimhen running to the corner flag, arms spread wide, 30,000 Nigerians erupting.

The VAR Controversy

Nigeria pushed for a winner. Substitute Ademola Lookman had a goal disallowed in the 78th minute for a marginal offside — the kind that requires six replays to determine. On another day, that is 2-1.
